Chemical Peels Q & A

What is a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels are cosmetic treatments in which your dermatologist or skin care expert applies a chemical solution to your skin, triggering a thorough exfoliation process. The team at Vanguard Dermatology provides chemical peels in a variety of strengths, using different chemicals and acids to help you get the youthful, glowing skin you want. They are:

  • Superficial peels
  • Medium peels
  • Deep peels
  • Customized acid peels with trichloroacetic acid (TCA), salicylic acid and glycolic acid

The team also offers VI Peels®, which are specifically formulated to address acne, signs of aging, scars, and other imperfections.

What Skin Imperfections Do Chemical Peels Correct?

The team at Vanguard provides skin consultations before recommending a chemical peel. They examine your skin, talk to you about your skin concerns, and ask about your current skin care habits. Chemical peels are often suggested to address skin concerns such as:

  • Acne scars
  • Crow’s feet
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Loose crepey skin
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Melasma
  • Age spots

What Should I Expect During a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is similar to other facial treatments. You rest on a treatment bed, and your dermatologist prepares your skin by cleansing it and applying a topical anesthetic. If you have a deep chemical peel, you can request a mild sedative to help you relax during your treatment.

Then, your doctor applies the chemical peel solution to your skin. You may feel a stinging or burning sensation. After the solution has been on your skin for the prescribed length of time — which varies between treatments — your doctor washes your skin with fresh, pure water and applies a soothing ointment.

How Should I Take Care of My Skin After a Chemical Peel?

Your doctor gives you specific aftercare instructions, depending on your treatment and your skin. Depending on the strength of your peel, you may need to wear bandages for up to two weeks after your procedure as your skin peels and heals. Your doctor may also recommend specific skin care products.
